In light of Whitney Houston’s death, at least we’re left with a multitude of R&B successors to remind us just how inspiring her life’s work is. Monica, who was one of Houston’s friends, is one of those ladies, and she’s reworking her own career on multiple fronts for a comeback. “It All Belongs To Me,” the lead single from her upcoming album, New Life, finds her reunited with her chanteuse counterpart, Brandy, 14 years after they released “The Boy Is Mine.” If singer/ actor Tyrese Gibson is the inspired boy in question, Monica wins. Gibson’s recording career could easily be reduced to slimy slow jams such as “Signs of Love Makin’” and “How You Gonna Act Like That” if it weren’t for valiant ballads such as “Sweet Lady” and “Lately.” Those tunes make this show an equal-opportunity crush-fest. His film performances (Baby Boy, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Transformers) might make him an easy target, but he’s a pinup beau nonetheless. Luckily, Monica seems willing to share. —Eric Tullis
